Climate Changes, I Change
My family and I have been dealing with various allergies and asthma for a long time. Every now and then, we find ourselves questioning whether our symptoms are getting worse. We suspect that these changes might be linked to human-induced climate change. Rising temperatures have altered pollen seasons and increased pollen loads, gradually reducing the time I can spend outdoors in my olive tree-filled garden. Spending more time indoors has led to a mix of increased stress, heightened anxiety, and intensified allergic reactions. On the other hand, it has also fueled my productivity.
The series “Climate Changes, I Change” emerged as a reflection of the shifting emotional and physical states I experienced between February 27 and May 2. One of the key pieces in this series is “Spring Allergies Bring Tears, and Tearful Eyes Bloom.” In this work, I depict a figure whose eyes are red, itchy, and watering from spring allergies, but instead of eyes, I’ve placed grass pollen in their sockets. This highlights how common and highly allergenic grass pollen is. As pollen seasons lengthen, these tiny particles linger in the air for longer periods. While nature bursts into green in spring, allergies flare up alongside it.
I painted my own face as a patch of soil and planted grass pollen where my eyes should be. In this way, I let the weather patterns unfold on my body. Nature exists in my work as it does in the world: it shifts, it transforms, and it grows.
